First, we need to determine the brew ratio.
What is the brew ratio?
It’s a ratio of water to coffee by weight. There is no good way to compare dry goods to wet by volume as if an apple compares to a bar of chocolate. To simplify this matter, the coffee industry comes up with is brew ratio.
The ratio is expressed as “water: coffee” in weight and coffee’s value is always 1. So all brew ratios will look something like 12:1, 15:1, 17:1, etc. The larger the number of water the weaker the coffee brew.
This coffee calculator’s unit of measurement used for the ratio is the imperial. For example:
15:1 means 15 ounces of water per 1 ounce of coffee.
All you need is a digital scale with 10th of an ounce of accuracy and you’re good to go!
My preferred brew ratio is 15:1. You can adjust the brew ratio to your taste, weak or strong. To make your brew stronger, decrease the water (i.e. 10:1). For a lighter brew, increase the water (i.e. 20:1).
Here is the real sample, I have a 12 oz French press and I want to make a 15:1 brew ratio coffee. How do I know how much coffee to use? It’s easy, simply divide the 12 oz by 15 because the coffee used is 1/15th of the water used. 12/15 = 0.8 ounces of coffee.
Assuming that I bought that coffee at $20/lb, 1lb = 16oz, 16/0.8=20 (cups of my 12 oz French press coffee at the brew ratio 15:1). $20/20cups=$1/cup.
This is just a very quick way to calculate the rough cost of each cup since we discount entirely the water, my labor time to make the coffee, the fuel cost to boil the water, etc.
If you like the weight of your coffee to be in metric units of grams, here is the conversion ratio:
1 ounce = 28.35 grams.
So 0.8 ounces = 22.68 grams.
