Which one is right for me? Nespresso VertuoNext or Nespresso VertuoPlus?

Nespresso is one of the biggest and best coffee makers for single-serve coffee machines.

These coffee-making machines use capsules (pods) containing ground coffee that is punctured before pressurized hot water is passed through to brew coffee, it is a very efficient and clean process to brew fresh delicious coffee at home.

Nespresso makes two types of machines:

1, take the iconic dome-shaped pods, which are called Nespresso Original,
2, the Vertuo line, which takes the larger Vertuo capsules, which were first introduced in the US in 2014.

Nespresso Vertuo machines are a popular choice for coffee lovers who want the convenience of a single-serve machine with the quality of a barista-made cup of coffee.

The Vertuo Next and Vertuo Plus are two of the most popular models in the Vertuo line, but they have some key differences.

In this article, we’ll compare the two machines side-by-side to help you decide which one is right for you.

The Vertuo Next is the brand’s most versatile Vertuo, while the Vertuo Plus is a convenient and easy-to-use coffee maker. The Nespresso Vertuo Plus is slightly larger than the VertuoNext. Neither does it come with a milk frother.

Nespresso VertuoNext or Nespresso VertuoPlus, which one is the right one for you?

Brew Sizes

Vertuo Next coffee maker offers a variety of coffee formats in 6 sizes, including 5, 8, 12, and 18oz coffees, as well as single and double espressos brewed hot or over ice.

The Vertuo Plus can brew four different cup sizes at the touch of a button: 5oz and 8oz coffee, single and double espresso. Pour over ice to create your favorite blend of iced coffee and lattes.

Power and Pressure

The Vertuo Next is packed into a compact footprint. It has a power of 1260W, a pressure of 19 bar, and a water tank position at the back. However, you’ll need to buy a separate milk frother if you like lattes.

On the other hand, the Nespresso Vertuo Plus is slightly larger than the VertuoNext. It has a power of 1300W, a pressure of 15 bar, and a water tank position at the side. This Nespresso machine also doesn’t come with a milk frother.

If you’re looking for a machine brewing better taste coffee, in my opinion, the Vertuo Next is the better choice with its high-pressure output.

Water Tank Capacity

The Vertuo Next has a water tank capacity of 37 oz (1 liter), while the Vertuo Plus has a water tank capacity of 40 oz for the standard and 60 oz for the deluxe model.

This means that with the Vertuo Plus, you can brew more cups of coffee before refilling the water tank.

If you’re looking for a machine with a larger water tank capacity, the Vertuo Plus is the better choice.

Used Capsule Container Capacity

All the Vertuo machines take Nespresso’s Vertuo capsules. They are wider and flatter than the iconic ‘original’ capsules.

The main uniqueness is that these capsules have a barcode printed on the side, containing instructions on how to adjust the brewing parameters, such as the flow and volume of water, temperature, infusion time, and capsule rotation.

The machine reads this barcode and then follows the parameters to ensure consistent coffee every time.

It is a very smart idea and saves lots of energy for the user to tweak the machine setting to achieve the optimal coffee brew.

The Vertuo Next has a used capsule container capacity of 8 capsules, while the VertuoPlus has a used capsule container capacity of 10 capsules.

This means that the Vertuo Plus can hold more used capsules before you need to empty the container.

If you’re looking for a machine with a larger used capsule container capacity, the Vertuo Plus is the better choice.

Dimensions and Weight

The Vertuo Next has dimensions of 5.59″D x 16.88″ W x 12.79″H, while the Vertuo Plus has dimensions of 6″D x 17″ W x 13″H. This means that the Vertuo Next is slightly smaller than the Vertuo Plus.

The Vertuo Next weighs 9 lbs, while the Vertuo Plus weighs 10 lbs. This means that the two machines are very similar in weight.

If you’re looking for a machine with a smaller footprint, the Vertuo Next is the better choice.

Design

These two Nespresso coffee machines certainly look different.

The Nespresso Vertuo Next is the smaller of the two machines, measuring 5.6 x 16.9 x 12.8 inches. It is very slim and slick, which makes it ideal for tight countertops.

It comes with a 37 oz water tank, which is removable for easy refill.

There are two designs for the Nespresso Vertuo Plus, both are larger and 3 inches wider than the Vertuo Next, they have a 40 oz liter water tank.

Also, Vertuo Plus Limited which looks the same as its standard version, has the largest water tank among these three models, at a capacity of 60 oz, so the users do not have to refill the reservoir that often.

Both, the Vertuo Next and Vertuo Plus, have removable drip trays. This makes it easy to clean the machines.

Automatic Shut-Off and Cord Storage

Both, the VertuoNext and VertuoPlus, have automatic shut-off features. This means that the machines will automatically turn off after a period of inactivity to save energy.

Both, the VertuoNext and VertuoPlus, have cord storage features. This means that you can neatly store the cord in the machine when it’s not in use.

Testing record

Both models created rich, intense espresso that had a thick crema.

The VertuoNext can brew espresso, double espresso, two larger coffee sizes (5 oz and 8 oz) as well as an 18 oz carafe for those that need an extra longer caffeine fix.

The VertuoPlus can only brew individual coffees, which means it can brew espresso and larger coffee sizes only, but no carafe.

Compared to VertuoPlus, the VertuoNext is slightly slower to heat up, it takes 30 seconds to reach temperature rather than the VertuoPlus’s 25 seconds. However, this isn’t a big difference in overall brewing time.

I like the VertuoPlus’ moveable water tank, which can be positioned at the back of the machine or to the left or right; so, it can easily fit into any kitchen set-up, whether there is a narrow countertop or an extremely tight space.

The VertuoNext water tank is fixed at the back of the machine and is slightly smaller than the VertuoPlus’.

The VertuoNext automatically shuts off after 2 minutes of idle. The VertuoPlus takes about 9 minutes to turn off automatically.

The Nespresso VertuoNext has Bluetooth and can connect to an app on any smartphone, it will alert the user when one’s stock of Vertuo capsules is getting low, as well as update the software when necessary.

While the VertuoPlus is not, this means that you cannot use the Nespresso app to control the VertuoPlus, including no way to brew coffee remotely.

Which One Should You Buy?

If one is looking for a compact coffee maker that can brew a range of different coffee sizes, the VertuoNext is the best option. It is also the most affordable Vertuo-compatible machine on the market.

If one wants the flexibility of being able to reposition the tank to fit in his/her kitchen, the VertuoPlus is a better choice.

So, which Nespresso Vertuo machine should you buy? It really depends on your individual needs and preferences.
